Safe Recruitment Procedures

All young people, including all the students at Rikkyo School, must be protected from abuse.  The prime concern of the School staff must be the interests and safety of the students entrusted to the School's care.  Under English Law, a 'child' is any person under the age of 18.  It therefore applies to practically all of the students at Rikkyo School.

The intention of this Policy is to make all staff aware of their responsibilities so as to ensure that appropriate action is taken immediately where it is alleged that a student is suspected of being abused.  Definitions of abuse, warning signs and the detailed action to be taken once abuse is suspected are given in the Staff Guidance Notes on Child Protection.  Every member of the School staff should be aware of the procedures to be followed in suspected cases.  These procedures are drawn to the attention of all new staff on joining the School, particularly those with the opportunity of sole access to a student or students.  It is the School's policy that all staff should be trained in child protection procedures and each staff member has an outline of the procedures to follow if an allegation is made known to that particular member of staff.  West Sussex County Council Guidelines state that the criteria for passing on information are that 'there are grounds for suspecting abuse' or 'potential risk of suffering abuse'.  Should a staff member become aware of an allegation of abuse the procedure set out in paragraph 7 of the Staff Guidance Notes MUST be followed.

The School operates safe recruitment procedures and has rigorous procedures to vet all visitors to the School.

2.Child Protection Officers

The following members of staff are the nominated Child Protection Officers:-

Michio Takahashi Deputy Headmaster

Christine Bird Deputy Bursar

As a full staff meeting is held every day, all incidents are reported and discussed at the meeting and any child protection issues are dealt with.

In line with Department for Education requirements, this policy is reviewed annually by the Headmaster (representative of the Board of Trustees) and the senior staff, whose responsibility it is to see that any deficiencies or weaknesses in safeguarding arrangements are remedied at once.
