今回の交換留学で学んだことはたくさんあります。
英語は勿論、始めて現地の学校の仕組みを目の当たりにして、立教や日本の学校との違いを知ることができました。
特に面白いと思った違いは3つあります。
1つ目は学校の仕組みです。
ミレースクールの建物は大体科目別になっていて、立教のように自分たちの教室で授業を受けることが少なく、毎回の移動がとても大変でした。皆が一斉に移動し、その上教室数が多いのではぐれそうになったりもしました。
またHRのような時間はなく、出欠を取るためだけの教室と担任、という感じでした。
教室は最早休み時間、昼休みなどの空いた時間のための 部屋、というイメージで、立教の私達の教室とはかなり違います。
また、ひとり一つの机がなく、長テーブルに各自座るようになっていて、イギリスらしいな、と思いました。
2つ目は人間関係についてです。
立教との違いを言うと、まずミレースクールには総勢1500人がいて、1学年でも300人の女の子たちがいること。
そしてもちろんホームルームが違えば関わりもほとんどなく、普段授業が重ならなければ話すこともないこと。
ここは日本の私立の学校と同じだな、と思いました。
しかし更に彼女たちは自分の好きな科目を選択するので、一人一人の時間割が違いました。
こうなると立教生のように全校の顔と名前が一致し、全員と話すような機会はありません。
私は交友関係が狭くなって 友達も出来にくいのではないかと思いましたが、特定の友達を大切にしていました。
こう考えると立教は人間関係を広く持つ事が出来、ミレーは狭く、その代わり深められる環境にあるのではないかと思いました。
やはり学校の環境が違うことは人間関係にも反映するのではないでしょうか。
3つ目は授業態度です。
私は何故か全員がきちんと授業を聞いていることに感動しました。
当たり前のことですが、どのクラスでも居眠りしている人がいないことはすごいと思いました。
ペアの子に聞いてみると、「居眠りは絶対ダメ」と言われました。
何がダメなのかと思って見ていると、グループ学習だからだ、と思いました。
先生が課題や話し合いの場を設けて周りで考えさせるので、寝る暇は ないのだと思います。
そこで思ったことは、日本は生徒が受け身ですが、イギリスは生徒が参加する教育だということです。
授業を聞かなくても白板を写せば何とかなる、という概念がなく、参加しなければいけない環境というのは案外生徒にとって良いのではないかと思います。
この他にもお菓子が持ち込み自由だったり、授業中に飲み物を飲んで良かったり、購買部があったりと色々な違いがありました。どちらが良いかなんて比べるには国も考え方も違いすぎますが、お互いにお互いの学校や文化の違いを分かり合えた良い機会になりました。これからもメールを続けるつもりなので、英語の応用力が上がればいいなと思います。

I learned a lot from this exchange. I learned not only English but also a lot about differences between Millais and Rikkyo. There are three differences I especially found interesting.
The first is about the structure of a school. There are many buildings, and each of them is dedicated to a different subject. They don’t stay in the same homeroom class all day. They have to move each period. They have a different classroom for each subject. They use home classroom only during a break time. Also, there is no table and chair for each person, but there are two long tables and chairs for everyone. I think these are big differences.
The second is about relationships among students. There are 1500 people in Millais school, and so 300 people are in one grade. If they aren’t in the same class, they don’t develop relationships. I think the number of students may be the same in average Japanese private schools. However, students choose subject themselves, and their timetables are different. Rikkyo students know the name of all students, but Millais students don’t have any opportunities to memorize the names of all students. I thought their relationships must be narrow, but they valued the relationships with specific friends. I thought Rikkyo students have wider relationships, but Millais students have deeper relationships. In my opinion, the environment of school has an influence on students’ relationships.
The third is about students’ attitude toward lessons. I was impressed that they concentrated hard during the lessons. They think sleeping in class is impossible and bad, because in every lesson they have to participate in group work. I think participatory learning is very good for students. I can’t decide which school is better, but we understood each school and culture is different. I will continue to exchange email with my friend in English. I think it will help me improve my English.
